Downtown Gloversville is buzzing with new energy, and right at 91 N. Main Street, a local training hub is quietly building confidence, discipline, and top-tier athleticism. Hernigle Combat Club, which officially opened its doors in April 2026, has quickly become a premier destination for combat sports in Fulton County. Designed as a safe, supportive environment, the club helps students grow in self-assurance while developing lifelong skills. The club is owned and operated by instructor Ryan Hernigle, a name already familiar to many across the region. In 2024, he traveled to Brazil to compete on the international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stage, and in 2025, he claimed championship victory in the international Unarmed Tactical Combat competition.

Hernigle’s martial arts journey began when a friend introduced him to Jiu-Jitsu, which served as a seamless complement to his background in wrestling. Standing alongside him is veteran instructor Chuck Holland who is a black belt mentor from whom Hernigle learned, and the creative mind behind Adirondack WoodSpirit (located at 31 N. Main St. inside Ricmar Print and Design Shop). The coaching team also features Tom Halloran, a dedicated brown belt actively working toward his black belt. Learning from these mentors with rich, proven journeys inspires students to continuously push their boundaries.

Hernigle Combat Club specializes in grappling arts, focusing primarily on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and wrestling:

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 14+): Evolving from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ is a combat sport and self-defense system that uses leverage, joint locks, holds, and positioning to subdue an opponent with minimal force. (Youth Jiu-Jitsu coming soon!)

  • Youth Wrestling (Grades 2nd – 8th): A foundational grappling sport centered on takedowns, control, positioning, functional strength, teamwork, and competitive discipline designed to introduce younger athletes to basic movements and fitness.

For individuals seeking one-on-one instruction or customized skill acceleration, private lessons are available upon request. Additionally, Coach Hernigle offers specialized group self-defense seminars. Whether for local organizations, corporate teams, or community groups, he is available to come directly to your facility or host a tailored class on site.

The club’s training philosophy is already yielding real-world results. Earlier this month, five students competed in Saratoga, walking away with a combined haul of two silver and three bronze medals for the team.

That blend of heart, strength, and loyalty is reflected directly in the club’s logo, which features an European Doberman modeled after Hernigle’s family dog, Romy. Known for intelligence, companionability, and protective instincts, the Doberman symbolizes the very core values taught on the mat.

Hernigle Combat Club is located inside the multi-purpose indoor recreation hub at 91 N. Main Street, sharing space with local spots like Venue 91, Upstate RC and Hobbies, and The Underground Wheelhouse to create a vibrant downtown destination.
