Bringing History to Life: Exploring the Fulton County Museum and the America 250 Commemoration

Nestled in the heart of Gloversville, New York, the Fulton County Historical Society and Museum, located at 237 Kingsboro Ave., serves as a vital custodian of local heritage. Housed in the charming former Kingsboro school building, originally constructed in 1900, the museum offers a fascinating window into the stories, industries, and individuals that shaped the Mohawk Valley region. This season, the museum is taking part in a landmark national milestone, making it the perfect time for residents and history buffs alike to plan a visit.
As part of the nationwide semi-quincentennial

commemorations, the museum is heavily engaged in celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Rather than focusing solely on distant battlefields. A particularly nostalgic and fascinating layer of this exhibition turns the lens inward, exploring how Fulton County celebrated the nation's last major milestone—the 1976 Bicentennial. By showcasing vintage photographs, community committee scrapbooks, and unique local memorabilia from fifty years ago, the exhibit connects generations of local residents and highlights the enduring ways our community honors its place in American history.

Beyond the Revolutionary War era, the Fulton County Museum is deeply committed to honoring those who stepped forward in times of conflict. One of the museum's most moving permanent fixtures is its dedicated local military service exhibit. This display meticulously tracks the contributions and sacrifices of Fulton County residents across various eras of American military history. Featuring a rich collection of local veterans' photos, personal memorabilia, and rare artifacts, the exhibit stands as a heartfelt tribute to the community's hometown heroes and provides an intimate look at the human side of service.
The museum is far from a quiet repository of artifacts; it is a bustling community hub with a full calendar of engaging programming. This summer marks the return of the popular Hands on History for Kids series, held on special Thursday mornings at 11:00 AM. Geared toward children ages 5 to 10, these interactive sessions use the museum's collections to explore unique weekly themes.
Admission to the museum is free, though donations are greatly appreciated to help sustain their collections and educational programs.
Museum Hours of Operation (July through Labor Day):
Thursday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Friday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Saturday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

(Note: The museum shifts to a weekend-only schedule of Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM from Labor Day through Columbus Day, and is closed for the winter season.)

Whether you want to explore the roots of American liberty, see how our parents and grandparents celebrated the Bicentennial, or spark a love of history in the next generation, the Fulton County Museum is a local treasure waiting to be discovered.
